The Best Whiteboard for an Executive Office or Boardroom in 2027

The Best Whiteboard for an Executive Office or Boardroom in 2027

Richard Jermyn

The short answer: the best whiteboard for an executive office or boardroom in 2027 is a 6mm floating magnetic glass whiteboard. It mounts on concealed brackets, so there are no screws or frame on show. It never ghosts. And it still looks new long after the rest of the fitout has started to date. Bestboard's version starts at R2 520 for a 600mm x 900mm board, and most boardrooms land somewhere between 1200mm x 1500mm and 1200mm x 2400mm.

That's the verdict. The rest of this guide is the reasoning, because the boardroom board is one of the most commonly botched purchases in an office fitout. Companies spend real money on the table, the chairs, the screen and the lighting. Then someone orders a standard aluminium-framed whiteboard off a supplier list, and it hangs there at the head of the room looking like a school staffroom.

We've been making boards in Wynberg, Johannesburg since 1996. Here's what we'd tell you if you walked into the factory and asked.

Why a boardroom whiteboard is a different purchase

A classroom board is a tool. A boardroom board is a tool that clients, investors and new hires look at while they form an opinion of your business. That changes what matters.

It's judged on looks first. In a training room nobody cares about a scuffed frame. In a boardroom, a faint grey shadow of last quarter's numbers says something about the company, and it isn't flattering.

It's used less, but under more pressure. An executive board might only be written on a few times a week. But those few times are strategy sessions, pitches and board meetings. If the marker smears or the old writing won't wipe off, it happens in front of the people you least want to see it.

It has to last as long as the fitout. Nobody wants to replace a boardroom board after three years, with the disruption of drilling and repainting that goes with it. The board should still look right when the room is next refurbished.

It's on camera. Most boardrooms now double as video-call rooms. Whatever hangs on the wall behind the presenter is on screen for every remote attendee.

A client in Rosebank, Johannesburg had exactly this problem in four boardrooms. The old whiteboards were ghosted and worn, and they made otherwise smart rooms look cheap and overused. They replaced all four with 6mm floating glass whiteboards in 1200mm x 1500mm. That's the problem this guide is about.

What to look for in an executive office whiteboard

Six things decide whether a boardroom board still looks good in 2032. In order of importance:

  1. A surface that never ghosts. Ghosting is the grey haze that marker ink leaves behind once a surface wears. A standard melamine whiteboard typically starts ghosting permanently after 3-5 years. A painted steel magnetic board lasts 5-10 years. Glass is non-porous, so ink has nothing to soak into, and it wipes clean for the life of the board.
  2. No visible fixings. Screws, standoff caps and aluminium frames all pull the eye. Concealed brackets let the board sit flush and "float" off the wall, which is the look architects and interior designers specify.
  3. A true white. Ordinary glass has a green tint that shows at the edges and dulls a white backing. Low-iron glass removes that tint, so the board reads as clean white and marker colours pop.
  4. Magnetic or not. If your team pins up printouts, org charts or floor plans during sessions, go magnetic. If the board is only ever written on, non-magnetic glass does the job and costs a little less.
  5. The right size for the room. Too small and it looks like an afterthought. Too big and it dominates. There's a sizing table further down.
  6. Proper installation. A large glass board is heavy. It needs the right fixings for your wall type, and it needs to go up level the first time.

Boardroom whiteboard options compared

Here's how the main board types stack up for an executive space, priced at the popular 900mm x 1200mm size.

Board type Ghosting Magnetic Fixings on show Look Price (900mm x 1200mm)
Non-magnetic melamine whiteboard Permanent ghosting after 3-5 years No Aluminium frame Functional R1 530
Magnetic painted steel whiteboard Permanent ghosting after 5-10 years Yes Aluminium frame Functional R1 810
6mm sandblasted glass whiteboard None No Four standoff screws Frosted, architectural R3 999
6mm floating glass whiteboard None No None, concealed brackets Clean white, frameless R3 999
6mm floating magnetic glass whiteboard None Yes, with neodymium magnets None, concealed brackets Clean white, frameless R4 199

Framed whiteboards still have their place. For a busy project room or training venue they're hard to beat on price. But in a space where the board is part of the impression you make, the glass options win easily.

Sandblasted glass is a good choice if you like a softer, frosted finish. For most boardrooms, though, we steer people to the floating white glass. It gives a brighter, cleaner white and has no screw caps on the face. If you'd like the full breakdown, read our glass board vs whiteboard comparison.

Our pick: the Bestboard 6mm floating magnetic glass whiteboard

The floating magnetic glass whiteboard is the newest board in our range, and it's the one we'd put in our own boardroom. It's an upgrade on our earlier white glass board, which was held off the wall by four standoff screws. The new version hangs on concealed wall brackets instead. From the front you see a sheet of white glass with rounded corners and nothing else.

What you're getting:

  • 6mm toughened low-iron glass. Thick enough to sit dead flat and rigid on the wall, with none of the green tint you get from ordinary glass.
  • A floating installation. Concealed brackets hold the board with no screws, caps or frame visible on the face.
  • A magnetic surface. Hang documents, plans and agendas during a session. It works with neodymium (rare-earth) magnets, which are sold separately. Ordinary fridge-style magnets aren't strong enough to hold through the glass.
  • Zero ghosting. Standard dry erase markers wipe off completely, years from now just as on day one.
  • Everything in the box. An acrylic pen tray, the mounting brackets, screws, wall plugs and instructions.
  • Made in South Africa. Manufactured by Bestboard in Johannesburg, with free delivery nationwide.

One Sandton law firm replaced an old framed magnetic board with a 1200mm x 1800mm floating magnetic glass board in their office. The partners' feedback was that it finally looked like it belonged in the room.

Don't need magnets? The floating non-magnetic glass whiteboard gives you the same look for a little less. Not sure which way to go? Our guide to magnetic vs non-magnetic whiteboards covers the trade-offs.

What size glass whiteboard does a boardroom need?

The board should feel in proportion to the wall and readable from the far end of the table. Use this as a rule of thumb, then measure your wall.

Size Works best in Floating magnetic Floating non-magnetic
600mm x 900mm Beside the desk in a private office R2 520 R2 399
900mm x 900mm Narrow wall in an executive office R3 260 R3 100
900mm x 1200mm Executive office or a 4-6 seat meeting room R4 199 R3 999
1200mm x 1200mm 6-8 seat meeting room R5 390 R5 099
1200mm x 1500mm 8-10 seat boardroom R6 560 R6 200
1200mm x 1800mm 10-12 seat boardroom R7 840 R7 399
1200mm x 2000mm 12-14 seat boardroom R8 620 R8 140
1200mm x 2400mm Large boardroom or a long feature wall R10 060 R9 480

All sizes include free delivery anywhere in South Africa.

A practical tip: if your screen and your board share a wall, measure the gap first. A board that crowds the screen looks cramped. Many boardrooms do better with the board on a side wall. For more on sizing, see our whiteboard sizes guide.

Installation, magnets and care

Installation. We install in Gauteng and Cape Town. Ask us for a quote when you order. Elsewhere in the country, the board ships with everything needed to mount it, and a competent handyman or your building's maintenance team can fit it. Large glass is heavy, so use two people and fixings that suit your wall. Drywall partitions need a different approach to brick or concrete.

Magnets. The magnetic board needs neodymium magnets, which aren't included. They're widely available online and from specialist hardware suppliers. They're strong, so let them come to the glass gently rather than snapping on from a distance.

Glare and cameras. Like any glass, the surface is reflective. Before you fix the position, stand where the camera will be and check for reflections from windows and downlighters. Moving the board half a metre often solves it.

Cleaning. Wipe with a dry eraser or microfibre cloth after each session. Every so often, give it a once-over with ordinary glass cleaner. Skip abrasive pads and scourers. Our guide on how to clean a whiteboard has more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best whiteboard for a boardroom? A 6mm floating glass whiteboard. It doesn't ghost, it has no visible fixings, and it suits a premium fitout. Choose the magnetic version if you want to pin up documents during meetings.

What is a floating glass whiteboard? It's a frameless glass whiteboard mounted on concealed wall brackets. Because nothing is visible on the face, the glass appears to float just off the wall.

Is a glass whiteboard worth the extra cost over a normal whiteboard? For a boardroom, yes. A melamine board typically starts ghosting permanently within 3-5 years and a painted steel board within 5-10 years. Glass doesn't ghost, so you buy it once.

Do magnetic glass whiteboards work with normal magnets? No. Standard magnets aren't strong enough to hold reliably through 6mm glass. You need neodymium (rare-earth) magnets, which are sold separately.

How much does a boardroom glass whiteboard cost in South Africa? Bestboard's floating magnetic glass whiteboards range from R2 520 for 600mm x 900mm to R10 060 for 1200mm x 2400mm. The non-magnetic version ranges from R2 399 to R9 480. Delivery is free nationwide.

Do you install glass whiteboards? Yes, in Gauteng and Cape Town. Contact us for a quote. Everywhere else, each board comes with brackets, screws, wall plugs and instructions.

What size whiteboard do I need for a 10-seat boardroom? Most 10-seat boardrooms suit a 1200mm x 1500mm or 1200mm x 1800mm board. Measure the wall first and allow breathing space around any screen.

The bottom line

If the boardroom is where your business makes its impression, the whiteboard is part of that impression. A framed board will do the job. A floating magnetic glass whiteboard will do the job and look like it was designed into the room, and it'll keep looking that way for as long as you own it.
