How to choose the right chalkboard

Use
Wall-mounted chalkboards are the most common choice for classrooms, offices and training centres — fixed to the wall, they provide a stable, full-size writing surface for daily use. Mobile chalkboards on castors suit training rooms and halls where the board needs to move between spaces without reinstalling. Hinge boards are ideal where wall space is limited but writing surface is critical — the fold-out wing panels double your available space when needed and sit flat against the wall when not in use. A-frame sandwich boards work best for restaurants, cafés and outdoor promotions where a portable, double-sided display is needed.

Size
For small offices, home workspaces and café menu boards, a 900mm x 1200mm chalkboard is usually enough. Standard South African classrooms typically use 1200mm x 2000mm or 1200mm x 2400mm boards so writing is visible from the back of the room. Large classrooms, lecture theatres and halls require 1200mm x 3000mm or a multi-panel hinge or swing leaf system. Custom sizes are available for non-standard wall spaces — contact us with your dimensions.

Magnetic or non-magnetic
Choose a magnetic chalkboard if you need to pin up notices, printed teaching aids, menus or documents directly on the board surface using magnets — no blu-tack or tape required. Magnetic boards are the preferred choice for South African classrooms and training centres where teachers display materials alongside their chalk writing. Non-magnetic chalkboards are more affordable and ideal for any space where a pure chalk writing surface is all you need, such as restaurant menu boards, home offices and community halls. Both options are available in the same range of sizes and frame finishes.

Chalkboard FAQs

What is the best chalkboard size for a classroom?
Most South African classrooms use chalkboards from 900mm x 1200mm up to 1200mm x 2400mm, depending on wall space and class size. Larger boards like 1200mm x 3000mm suit lecture theatres and hall spaces where learners at the back need to see clearly. Custom sizes are also available for non-standard walls.

What is the difference between magnetic and non-magnetic chalkboards?
Magnetic chalkboards have a steel backing so you can use magnets to hold up notices, printed sheets and teaching aids alongside your chalk writing. Non-magnetic boards are a more affordable option and are ideal for classrooms, restaurants and any space where a pure chalk writing surface is all you need.

Do you supply chalkboards for restaurants and cafés?
Yes — we supply wall-mounted boards, mobile boards and A-frame sandwich chalkboards for menus, specials and promotions in restaurants and cafés across South Africa. Magnetic models also let you pin printed inserts alongside your chalk writing.

How do you season a new chalkboard?
To season a new chalkboard, lay a piece of chalk on its side and rub it across the entire surface both horizontally and vertically. Then wipe the board clean with a dry eraser. This fills the microscopic pores in the surface and prevents ghosting from your first use. Skipping this step on a new board can leave permanent marks.

How do you clean a chalkboard properly?
Wipe daily with a dry felt eraser to remove chalk dust. For a deeper clean, use a damp cloth with a small amount of water and wipe in one direction, then allow the surface to dry completely before writing again. Avoid abrasive cleaners and paper towels which can scratch the surface. A well-maintained chalkboard will last for many years without ghosting.

What is the difference between a chalkboard and a blackboard?
Chalkboard and blackboard refer to the same product — a writing surface used with chalk. The term blackboard is older and refers to the traditional black slate surface, while chalkboard is the more modern term. Today most boards are green rather than black, but both terms are used interchangeably in South Africa.
