Classroom Whiteboard Size Guide for Teachers and School Buyers

Classroom Whiteboard Size Guide for Teachers and School Buyers

Rosa Barnard

Choosing the right whiteboard size for a South African classroom makes a real difference to visibility, teaching flow and how much time teachers spend erasing mid-lesson. This guide covers standard sizes by grade level, correct mounting heights, magnetic vs non-magnetic options, and how to place a bulk school order with BestBoard - manufacturing school boards in Johannesburg since 1996.

Before you commit to a size, decide if a fixed wall-mounted board or a portable mobile board suits your classroom layout better. Read our guide on Wall-Mounted vs Mobile Whiteboards for South African classrooms.

Why Whiteboard Size Matters in the Classroom

A board that is too small for the room forces teachers to write smaller, erase more frequently and lose learners at the back of the class. The right size means larger writing visible from every desk, more space for diagrams and activity zones, less interruption to teaching flow, and better use of available wall space. For classes of more than 30 learners, always choose at least 1200x2400mm.

Standard Classroom Whiteboard Sizes in South Africa

Foundation Phase (Grade R to 3)

900x1200mm - the most common size for smaller Foundation Phase classrooms with younger learners sitting closer to the board. Suitable where wall space is limited.

Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 7)

1200x1800mm - provides more writing room for daily subjects, diagrams and visual work. The preferred size for standard intermediate classrooms across South Africa.

Senior Phase and FET (Grade 8 to 12)

1200x2400mm - the standard size for most South African high school classrooms. Ideal for larger classes and subjects with extensive notes, diagrams and worked examples. For very large lecture-style rooms, the 1200x3000mm is available as a custom size - contact us for a quote.

Correct Board Mounting Height by Grade

The bottom of the main writing area should be mounted at the following heights from the floor:

  • Grade R to 3 - 650mm to 700mm from floor to the main writing line
  • Grade 4 to 7 - 750mm to 800mm
  • Grade 8 and up - 850mm

Correct mounting height ensures learners at the front are not straining upward and those at the back have an unobstructed sightline to the full writing area.

Whiteboard or Chalkboard for South African Schools?

Both are widely used in South African schools. Whiteboards use dry-erase markers and are easier to clean - the preferred choice for new school builds and refurbishments. Chalkboards remain standard in many government schools, particularly where dust is less of a concern. BestBoard manufactures both - view our school boards range which includes magnetic whiteboards, non-magnetic whiteboards and magnetic chalkboards in all standard classroom sizes.

Magnetic vs Non-Magnetic School Boards

Magnetic whiteboards have a steel-backed surface that holds magnets, allowing teachers to attach printed worksheets, maps, charts and teaching aids directly to the board alongside writing - no blu-tack or tape required. This is the more popular choice for modern South African classrooms. Non-magnetic whiteboards are more affordable and suited to classrooms where magnets are not required.

Pre-Order Checklist for Schools

  • Check sightlines from desks at the back and sides of the room
  • Confirm mounting height for the grade group
  • Decide between magnetic and non-magnetic surface
